Operation Moshtarak: Civilian Casualties “Inevitable”

in Intervention

U.S. and Afghan soldiers outside Marjah are engaging in the largest offensive of the 9 yr Afghan war…

At what cost and what benefit?

Top video is a brief AP report…

2nd video is pointing out the “inevitable” civilian casualties of this offensive…

What is “Operation Moshtarak”

The objective of Operation Moshtarak, which means “together” in Dari, is to secure the region from narcoterrism (narcoterrorism) and establish basic services under supervision of the Afghan government, a senior defense official told Fox. To do that, Afghan and NATO forces need to defeat the remaining insurgents and drastically reduce the number of heroin producing crops that fund the Taliban. U.S. commanders are confident they’ll win the fight, but removing the poppy will prove harder than the battle.FOXNews.com.

(I think that narcoterrorism is a new (or just revealed) angle being applied to the “offensive” in Afghanistan.)

Pakistan weighs in…

Pakistani Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met with U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal and James Jones, the U.S. national security adviser, ahead of an international assault in Afghan’s Helmand province.

Kayani stressed that all U.S. and NATO military action in the region should remain on the Afghan side of the border, Pakistan’s Dawn news agency reports. He added that U.S. military officials should share intelligence information with Pakistani security forces as well.UPI.com.
