DHS Napolitano says – 150 Body Scanners Done & 500 MORE Body Scanners to be installed in 2010 – 2011.

But you would be hard-pressed to understand that from the Press Release…

Napolitano obamaSecretary Napolitano Highlights Strengthened Aviation Security and Stimulus Provided to Local Economies on Recovery Act Anniversary http://www.dhs.gov

To date, the Department has invested Recovery Act funding in communities across America:

  • $25 million for 150 AIT units, which detect metallic and non-metallic threats, including explosives, on passengers in a matter of seconds;
  • $50.4 million for 12 closed circuit television systems, which enhance threat detection and emergency response efforts;

Additionally, President Obama’s fiscal year 2011 budget prioritizes key investments in aviation security, including:

  • $88 million to purchase 500 AIT units to deploy at airport checkpoints;

Forget the argument over if it’s right or wrong to use body scanners in the first place…

Why does DHS only refer to them as “AIT Units” in the public notices?

Why do you have to go to the 2011FYB to find out what the heck AIT stands for?

Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT)Bodyscanners -$214.7M and 10 positions (5 FTE) to purchase and install 500 AITs at airport checkpoints. The FY 2011 request, combined with units TSA plans to install in 2010 will mean that 1,000 AIT scanners will provide AIT coverage at 75 percent of lanes at Category X airports and 60 percent of the total lanes at Category X through II.

Then this raises new questions. Why does it show $100,000,000.00 MORE for Body Scanners (AIT Units for DHS readers) than what the press release stated?

It’s also good to note that keeping in the spirit of the “Patriot Act” and full-transparency – you have to go to

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
