Why Call it “Swine Flu” when it is “Human-Avian-Swine-Flu”?

EVERY Media source is leading with “Swine Flu” or “Swine Influenza”… Why? Or Why should anyone Media kool aid 1care?

Well, if you dig a little bit, you will find that the influenza outbreak in Mexico City and the US are a mutation of FOUR Viruses form THREE Continents… AND…

Creates a very “novel” strain that is not SWINE FLU… it is  HUMAN-Avian-Swine-Flu!

It Is The Feared BIRD FLU Mutated to HUMANS and is being passed Human to Human… that is WHY it should not be dismissed as “JUST” another Swine Flu… because it is not!

And more IMPORTANT is Where and How did this thing Evolve and End Up in Mexico City? See my posts on the Baxter Cover-up that involves the World Health Organization…

“Mexico City fights swine flu epidemic – Los Angeles Times”Swine flu virus

Besser said the CDC had found that half of 14 samples from Mexico were positive for swine flu, with “similarity” to the strain that appeared in the U.S. “It’s safe to say it’s the same virus, from what we know,” he said.

Investigators are looking into why the disease is so much more severe in Mexico, Besser said, and a CDC team will be traveling to Mexico.

The new swine virus is unlike any researchers have seen before. It appears to be a combination of segments from four viruses from three continents, with a human segment, an avian segment and pig segments.

“Deadly new flu strain breaks out in Mexico and U.S. – Yahoo! News”

Mexico swine flu militaryThe outbreak jolted residents of the Mexican capital, one of the world’s biggest cities with 20 million residents.

One pharmacy ran out of surgical face masks after selling 300 in a day.

“We’re frightened because they say it’s not exactly flu, it’s another kind of virus and we’re not vaccinated,” said Angeles Rivera, 34, a federal government worker who fetched her son from a public kindergarten that was closing.

The virus is an influenza A virus, carrying the designation H1N1. It contains DNA from avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses, the CDC has said.

The Geneva-based U.N. agency WHO said it was in daily contact with U.S., Canadian and Mexican authorities and had activated its Strategic Health Operations Centre (SHOC) — its command and control centre for acute public health events.

The CDC said it will issue daily updates at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/investigation.htm.

Surveillance for and scrutiny of influenza has been stepped up since 2003, when H5N1 bird flu reappeared in Asia. Experts fear that or another strain could spark a pandemic that could kill millions.

Besser said the agency was not calling for any travel restrictions to Mexico or to the affected areas in the U.S. “We’re reminding travelers of our standard recommendations,” such as washing your hands frequently and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. “If you are sick and have the flu, you should stay home and not get on a bus or airplane.”

The new swine virus is unlike any that researchers have seen before. It appears to be a combination of segments from four different viruses from three continents, including a human segment, an avian segment and pig segments.

Epidemiologists are typically concerned about swine flu because the animals often play a crucial role in the creation of new flu strains. While viruses from birds are rarely transmitted among humans, bird and human viruses can mix in pigs, creating hybrids that retain the virulence of bird flus while gaining the ability to pass from human to human.

The U.S. suffered outbreaks of swine flu in 1976 and 1988, but both were limited in scope and spontaneously disappeared.

The new virus appears to be made up of four different flu viruses: North American swine influenza; a swine influenza virus typically found in Asia and Europe; human influenza A; and a North American avian influenza. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s Dr. Anne Schuchat calls it “an unusually mongrelized mix of genetic sequences.”

What makes this new virus worrisome is how easily it appears to be able to pass from person to person. With cases popping up across the globe every day, how far this virus has already spread has yet to be fully assessed.

“CIDRAP >> Labs confirm same swine flu in deadly Mexican outbreaks”
Lisa Schnirring * Staff Writer

Apr 24, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – Samples from a deadly respiratory illness outbreak in Mexico match swine influenza isolates from patients in the United States who had milder illnesses, an official from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today, fueling speculation that the World Health Organization (WHO) could be on the verge of raising the global pandemic alert level.

Richard Besser, MD, the CDC’s acting director, told reporters today during a press teleconference that the development is worrisome. “Our concern has grown since yesterday, based on what we’ve learned,” he said. “We do not know if this will lead to the next pandemic, but our scientists are monitoring it and take the threat very seriously.”

The swine flu A/H1N1 strain has been confirmed in one more US citizen, a child from San Diego who has recovered, raising the total number of US cases to eight, Besser said. The virus contains gene segments from four different influenza types: North American swine, North American avian, human, and Eurasian swine.

According to Besser, the CDC is working on a vaccine seed strain, but no decision has been made to manufacture a vaccine to prevent infection with the new virus.

Such a process could take months, said Schuchat, given that the virus encompasses genetic pieces from four different virus sources: North American avian influenza virus, North American swine influenza virus, and human influenza viruses from Asia and Europe.

This particular genetic combination of swine influenza virus segments has not been recognized before in the U.S. or elsewhere,” she said.

CDC Briefing on Public Health Investigation of Human Cases of Swine Influenza

ANNE SCHUCHAT, MD, Interim Deputy Director for Science:Cdc schuchat

Preliminary testing of viruses from the first two patients shows that they are very similar. Additional testing is ongoing with the newer isolettes. We know so far that the viruses contain genetic pieces from four different virus sources. This is unusual. The first is our North American swine influenza viruses. North American avian influenza viruses, human influenza viruses and swine influenza viruses found in Asia and Europe.

That particular genetic combination of swine influenza virus segments has not been recognized before in the U.S. or elsewhere. Of course, we are doing more testing now and looking more aggressively for unusual influenza strains. So we haven’t seen this strain before but we haven’t been looking as intensively as we are these days.

The viruses are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine anti-viral drugs but they are sensitive or susceptible to oseltamivir and zanamivir, the newer anti-viral drugs for flu. And at this time we don’t know exactly how people got the virus. None of the patients have had direct contact with pigs.

COX: Thank you very much. The virus that has caused these infections is viruses are actually very interesting. They contain genetic segments as Dr. Schuchat said from four different virus sources.

So we have some gene segments that are North American swine influenza viruses. Some gene segments North American avian influenza viruses. One gene segment from a human influenza virus and two gene segments that are normally found from swine influenza viruses in Asia and in Europe.

We’ve found that the gene sequences from the viruses causing infection in those individuals are very, very similar to those in the initial two cases. So, we’re seeing basically a virus that appears to be spreading from person to person in humans and viruses have very similar genetic characteristics to each other.

SCHUCHAT: Yes, let me actually answer that and then offer that we could get you more information in follow-up. I think it’s – the virus – what we have is unusual the reassortant (ph) with these four genetic sequences is unusual. The avian (ph) lineage I don’t have that information and if it’s available we can try to get it for you later.

HI, DR. SCHUCHAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I HAD A COUPLE QUESTIONS, IF I MIGHT. ONE IS ABOUT THE SITUATION IN MEXICO. AT THIS POINT, HOW MANY SAMPLES DO YOU HAVE THAT HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FROM MEXICO? IS IT STILL SEVEN OR DO YOU HAVE MORE? AND HOW MANY OF THOSE PEOPLE ARE THOSE, YOU KNOW, HOW MANY OF THOSE PEOPLE DIED, IF YOU KNOW THAT? AND I HAVE A SECOND QUESTION AFTER THAT, IF THERE’S TIME.
>>

YES, I DON’T HAVE UPDATED NUMBERS FROM MEXICO. I CAN TELL YOU THAT WE KNOW THAT SOME OF THE TESTS THAT WE HAVE ARE FROM PATIENTS THAT WERE SEVERELY ILL OR HAD FATAL INFECTIONS. THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF TESTS OF VIRUSES FROM THE PAST FEW MONTHS THAT HAVE JUST SHOWN A SEASONAL PATTERN. APPARENTLY, ACTUALLY WE DO HAVE 12 SAMPLES FROM MEXICO THAT ARE POSITIVE, SO A FEW MORE THAN WHAT YOU HEARD ABOUT BEFORE, I GUESS IT’S 12 UP FROM THE 7 THAT WE HAD EARLIER, BUT YOU KNOW, I WOULDN’T FOCUS ON THE NUMBERS RIGHT NOW. I THINK IT’S VERY CLEAR THAT IN MEXICO, THERE IS CONFIRMED SWINE INFLUENZA, THIS NEW STRAIN THAT LOOKS LIKE THE SAME STRAIN AS WHAT WE’RE SEEING HERE IN THE U.S., AND IT’S PRETTY CLEAR THAT IN MEXICO THEY’RE HAVING DISEASE IN MULTIPLE PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. AT THIS POINT, THERE’S LOTS MORE WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE PATTERN OF ILLNESS THERE, AND THE EXTENT, AND WE DO HAVE TEAMS THERE TRYING TO LEARN.

CDC – Influenza (Flu) | Interim Guidance for Infection Control for Care of Patients with Confirmed or Suspected Swine Influenza A (H1N1) Virus Infection in a Healthcare Setting

April 27, 2009 07:45 PM EDT

BACKGROUND
To date, human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection have been confirmed in residents of California, Texas, and Mexico. Illness signs and symptoms have consisted of influenza-like illness – fever and respiratory tract illness (cough, sore throat, runny nose), headache, muscle aches – and some cases have had vomiting and diarrhea. These cases had illness onset during late March to mid-April 2009. However, cases of severe respiratory disease, including fataloutcomes, have been reported in Mexico. The potential for exacerbation of underlying chronic medical conditions or invasive bacterial infection with swine influenza virus infection should be considered.

The swine influenza A (H1N1) virus that has infected humans in the U.S. and Mexico is a novel influenza A virus that has not previously been identified in North America. This virus is resistant to the antiviral medications amantadine and rimantadine, but is sensitive to oseltamivir and zanamivir. Investigations of these cases suggest that on-going human-to-human swine influenza A
