By Roger Runningen and Tom RandallMay 15 (Bloomberg) — Thomas Frieden, New York City’s health commissioner, has been selected by President Barack Obama as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The president will announce the selection of Frieden, a 48- year-old specialist in infectious diseases, today, said Glen Nowak, a CDC spokesman, in a telephone interview. Frieden will take over in June from Richard E. Besser, the acting head of the Atlanta-based agency, the CDC said in an e-mailed statement.
Frieden has been New York City’s commissioner of health and mental hygiene since January 2002, and heads a staff of more than 6,000, according to the department’s Web site. He will take over the agency that’s been in the forefront of combating the global outbreak of swine flu. Besser has led near-daily media briefings and made regular television appearances on swine flu since the first outbreak was reported three weeks ago.
